1970년대 수많은 예술가들이 활동하던 남현동 예술인 마을은 시간이 지남에 따라 예술인이 줄어들면서 사라져 갔다.
한 때 예술인들의 삶의 터전이자 놀이터였던 이 곳을, 남서울미술관 리모델링을 통해 재활성화하고자 한다.
Namhyeon Art Village, where numerous artists lived and worked in the 1970s, gradually disappeared as the number of artists decreased over time. I therefore intended to reactivate this village, which was once the home and playground of artists, through this remodeling project.
Site Analysis
1968년 형성된 남현동 예술인 마을은 1970년대까지 90여 명의 예술가들이 거주하며 활발한 예술 활동을 펼치던 장이었다. 그러나 예술인의 수가 점차 줄어들면서 예술인 아파트가 철거되었고, 그에 따라 예술인 마을의 존재감도 희미해져 갔다.
2010년대에는 남서울 예술인 마을로 이름을 바꾸고 마을을 부활시키려는 움직임이 있었다. 그럼에도 예술인 마을은 아직 활성화되지 않고 있으며, 현재 14명의 예술가만이 이 지역에 남아 활동을 이어가고 있다.
Namhyeon Art Village, formed in 1968, was the home and playground of numerous artists until the 1970s. However, as the number of artists decreased over time, the artist apartment was demolished, and the village seemed to disappear along with it.
In the 2010s, there was a movement to change the village’s name to Namseoul Art Village and revive the village. Nevertheless, the artist village is not yet active, and there are only 14 artists remaining in the area today.
대상 건물인 서울시립 남서울미술관에서 주목한 점은 다음과 같다.
1. 사당역에 매우 가까이 위치해 있지만, 역에서 나와 걸어가는 길에 미술관의 모습을 전혀 볼 수 없다. 은행 건물이 미술관을 완전히 막고 있어 건물의 존재조차 알기 어렵다.
2. 사당역 6번 출구에서 남서울미술관으로 향하는 길에는 남현예술정원이 위치해 있다. 이는 초기 예술인들의 활동과 남현동 예술인 마을을 기념하기 위해 조성된 작은 휴게공원이다.
이 두 가지 특성에 기인해, 사당역에서 남현예술정원을 지나는 행인들의 발걸음이 자연스레 남서울미술관까지 닿도록 예술정원과 미술관을 연결하고자 했다.
Here are what I focused on regarding SeMA(Seoul Museum of Art), the target building of the project:
1. Even though it is very close to Sadang Station, you cannot see the building at all on your way out of the station. A lot of people are not even aware of the existence of the building because it is completely blocked by the bank.
2. Namhyeon Art Garden is located on the road from Exit 6 of Sadang Station to SeMA. This is a small rest park created to commemorate the activities of early artists and Namhyeon Art Village.
Due to these two characteristics, I decided to create a path which connects the art garden and the art museum, so that the people who pass through the Namhyeon Art Garden from Sadang Station naturally reach the museum.
Concept
남현예술정원과 남서울미술관 사이를 막고 있는 건물에 작은 길을 냄으로써, 예술정원에서 미술관으로 이어지는 흐름을 형성하였다. 미술관으로 향하는 길에는 예술가들이 작업하는 모습을 볼 수 있게 하여 시각적인 예술의 흐름이 끊기지 않도록 했다.
이 작은 흐름이 널리 퍼져 예술인 마을이 되살아나길 바라본다.
By creating a path in the building that blocks the museum, I made a flow of art, from the art garden to SeMA. Visitors can see the artists working on their way to the museum, so that the flow of art continues.
Hopefully this little flow will become widespread so that the artist village will be revived.
Program
건물이 오랫동안 가치를 유지하기 위해서는 현재뿐만 아니라 미래에도 유용하게 쓰일 수 있어야 한다고 생각했다. 특히, 이미 한 번 저물었던 예술인 마을을 되살리려면 기존과는 다른 새로운 가치가 필요했다. 사이트의 예술적 성격을 유지하면서 앞으로도 수요를 지닐 법한 프로그램을 고민했고, 메이커스페이스가 떠올랐다.
I thought that in order for the building to maintain its value for a long time, it has to be useful not only now but also in the future. In particular, a new value was essential to revive the village that had already been buried once. I thought about programs that would continue to be in demand while maintaining the artistic character of the site, and Makerspace came to mind.
새로 만들어진 메이커스페이스 건물은 기존 남서울미술관과 브릿지로 연결되어, 미술관 관람을 마친 방문객들의 발걸음을 자연스레 유도한다. 방문객들은 이 곳에서 예술가들이 활동하는 모습을 보거나 직접 메이커가 되어 창작 활동을 펼칠 수 있다.
The newly created makerspace building is connected to the existing building (SeMA) by a bridge, which naturally induces visitors who have finished touring the museum. Visitors can see artists working here, or become makers themselves and engage in creative activities.
Design
예술정원에서 미술관까지, 또 미술관에서 메이커스페이스까지 전부 하나의 흐름처럼 자연스럽게 이어지길 바랐기에, 새 건물을 디자인할 때도 남서울미술관이 가진 어휘를 지키려 노력했다.
외장재로는 미술관과 같은 붉은 벽돌을 사용하였고, 미술관 건물의 특징 중 하나인 굴뚝을 디자인 요소로 차용해 자연 환기에 활용했다.
Since I wanted to make it naturally continue from art garden to the museum and from the museum to the makerspace, I tried to keep the vocabulary of SeMA when designing a new building.
Red bricks were used as exterior materials, just like SeMA. And chimneys, one of the characteristics of SeMA, were borrowed as design elements and used for natural ventilation.
